Roller derby thrives in Athens: Season opener February 4th

Athens’ own Classic City Rollergirls are waging war on wheels, opening their 2012 season on February 4th against Little City. The Tale of Two Cities bout will be held at the Athens Arena, 280 Commerce Boulevard, Bogart, Ga. Doors open at 6 pm. Action at 7 pm. CCRG merchandise, snacks, and beverages are available throughout the event.
The Tale of Two Cities season opener will feature CCRG’s trained skaters who dedicate seven hours a week to learning the sport of roller derby, from endurance and skating techniques to strategy. This group of women is diverse in age, profession and past experience with sports, but works together as a cohesive unit in one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The bout will also include numerous volunteers, such as referees and non-skating officials and more.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $12 for adults. Kids age 5 and under are free! Advance tickets can be purchased for $10 from any rollergirl or online. Don’t forget to check out our website where the team posts frequent updates about outreach projects, as well as photos of Athens’ favorite rollergirls.
So what is roller derby?
Flat-track roller derby has made a huge revival in the past 10 years alone. It pairs together strong women, athletics, teamwork and full-contact fun for an exciting, but very real, sport. Two teams race around the track while their individual jammers, the point-scorers with the stars on their helmet, weave through blockers to score points. As the jammers skate through, teams use strategic blocking, as well as assists to their own jammer, to get the most points at the end of the two-minute “jam.”
