CCRG is committed to serving the greater Athens community through volunteering and also fundraising for area non-profits and causes. We donate a portion of our bout proceeds to various charities.
Athens Clarke Literacy Council
CCRG donated to the Athens Clarke County Literacy Council at our June 2011 bout. The Literacy Council is a non-profit organization that promotes and supports learning opportunities for adult residents in the Athens community. We also held a book drive in conjunction with our bout for the Friends of Oconee County Library.
Bout Against Breast Cancer
CCRG thanks YOU for our most successful charity event EVER! We raised $2,565 for breast cancer survivors through the Cancer Foundation of Northeast GA at our May 1st 2011 bout against the Savannah Derby Devils. Thirteen rollergirls and community leaders had breast casts made and decorated by area artists that were then auctioned at half time for the Foundation. The Cancer Foundation provides financial assistance to cancer survivors in Northeast Georgia who are experiencing an immediate financial crisis because they cannot pay for basic life needs such as housing, food, utilities, or essential medications.
Where the Rubber Wheels Hit the Road
Our skaters are always out and about giving back to Athens both on and off the skates. Here’s just a few of the things we’ve been up to so far in 2011:
- Cooked and served dinners for several families at a local women’s shelter
- Demonstrated roller derby for students at Whitehead Road Elementary School
- Volunteered at the Stable Foundation’s Mardi Gras 10K race to raise funds to end homelessness in Athens
- Sold raffle tickets at Taste of Athens to raise money for Community Connection of NE GA
- Skated at the 2011 Race for the Chase at Chase Street Elementary School
- Planted trees at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at JJ Harris Elementary School
National Marrow Donor Foundation
In April 2011 at our first bout of the season, CCRG raised $215 for the National Bone Marrow Donor Foundation: Be the Match. Be the Match raises funds to help patients in need of a bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant receive the treatment they need. For more information about Be the Match, visit www.marrow.org.
